Play Webster For Me...

This weekend Greg Chandler will be prompting us to think about the idea that "God Is Holy".

Sounds right, but what does it mean? Holiness is one of those terms we use to describe God, but can we define it?

Take your best shot.

What are we trying to say about God by describing Him as "HOLY"?

What would you say to a 6 year old who asked you what "HOLY" means?

If it is true that God is "HOLY", what would that mean to/for us?

Give it some thought and post your insights, questions and ramblings by using the comment feature.

Thought about this one a long time.....normally we use the word 'holy' to mean something like "set aside for God" or uniquely religious, as in a "holy place", or the Holy Scriptures.

However, to say God is Holy is different.... how can he be set aside for himself?

So, the best I could come up with is that "God is Holy" means He is the ultimate standard by which all other things are measured. His goodness, justice, mercy, grace are the ultimate measuring stick by which all other things must be compared.

In this way, phrases like striving to be holy and making ourselves holy mean that we are trying to reach God's standard as best we can. In a holy place all thoughts will be discarded except those focused on the greatness of God and His ultimate standard.
