Looking Up To Tammy Faye???

Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Bakker) was one of those public, religious figures that illicited strong reactions from people. (Usually negative reactions for negative reasons.) After her passing, at least one columnist praised her.

Not for the way she lived in the public spotlight.

But for the way she died in it.

This was a great article. It gave a great perspective on death and what 'death with dignity' truly means.

Lately I've been bothered by how much our culture pretends that death doesn't exist. People give the impression that we can 'save lives' by passing the correct laws. The truth is that we never save lives. The best we might be able to do is postpone deaths, and frankly, I'm not sure we can even do that. (My Calvinist friends would assure me that we can't.)

Interestingly enough I read that Castro Street in San Francisco was the site of several spontaneous tributes to Tammy Faye. Castro street is the center of a large homosexual community. Later in life it seems that a lot of people saw an important and stirring compassion in Tammy Faye's life.
